Honours were even at Whaddon Road as lowly Cheltenham Town held third-placed Wycombe Wanderers to a 1-1 draw.

It was a keenly-contested encounter in which neither side really did enough to win, veteran midfielder Keith Ryan registering an equaliser for the visitors after Jamie Victory had put the home side in front.

Goalscoring chances were in short supply until the 25th minute when Cheltenham's Martin Devaney held off Wycombe defender Roger Johnson before volleying a shot over the crossbar.

Ryan saw a 35th minute long-range drive touched over the bar by Cheltenham goalkeeper Shane Higgs, but two minutes later the deadlock was broken.

Defender John Brough launched a long ball forward, Steve Guinan headed it across goal and left-back Victory, who was still forward having moved up for a free-kick moments earlier, reached the ball fractionally ahead of Wycombe goalkeeper Frank Talia to head it into the net.

The visitors almost levelled a minute before half-time when Johnson met a corner from Danny Senda with a firm header but Cheltenham's Grant McCann was there to clear it off the line.

Wycombe were much brighter after the break and created a succession of chances without finding a way past Higgs.

The Robins goalkeeper got down to hold firm strikes from Ryan and Clint Easton as Wycombe passed with much greater purpose than they achieved in the first period.

Cheltenham almost grabbed a second goal when teenage striker Ashley Vincent latched onto a pass from Guinan but Talia was equal to his shot.

The goal Wycombe had been threatening duly arrived in the 74th minute when Cheltenham's JJ Melligan won the ball by the corner flag and then promptly gave it away again to Easton.

The Chairboys midfielder swept the ball across the edge of the box to Ryan, who hooked it beyond Higgs to win a point for Tony Adams' side.
