Torquay United maintained the pressure on the top three in the third division with an impressive win at Cheltenham Town.

The result brought to an end Cheltenham's mini revival in fortunes and, coupled with Huddersfield Town's 0-0 draw at Hull City, left the Gulls three points behind the third placed Terriers with two games left to play.

The result of this game was never really in doubt from the 18th minute when a diagonal ball from Alex Russell was touched on by David Graham and former Arsenal trainee Jo Kuffour beat goalkeeper Shane Higgs with a low finish.

Cheltenham striker Paul Brayson sent a volley just wide after 25 minutes, but that was a rare chance for the home side who rarely threatened Torquay's dominance.

Craig Taylor should have made it 2-0 when he headed wide from a good position shortly before the break, and Higgs was forced to make an excellent save from Graham on the hour mark.

Torquay finally added a deserved second goal on 65 minutes when central defender Steve Woods met a Russell corner with a free header from around 10 yards.

The result was put beyond doubt 12 minutes from time when midfielder Matthew Hockley made a strong run through the middle and supplied Kuffour, whose low shot gave Higgs no chance.

Cheltenham scored a late consolation when a mammoth clearance from Higgs bounced deep into the Torquay area and striker Damian Spencer beat goalkeeper Arjan Van Heusden to it and scored with a header.

"It was a good performance and it keeps us going," said Torquay manager Leroy Rosenior.

"We are taking it one game at a time and if we beat Kidderminster next week it will take it to the last game of the season. That is our aim at the moment." Cheltenham boss John Ward said: "We were beaten by a better team on the day and we have to learn from it. We are building for the future but it is a gradual process. Torquay are a good example for us because they have a good team but it was not put together overnight."
