Doncaster Rovers moved up to second in the table with their sixth away win of the season and consigned Cheltenham Town to their 10th reverse of the campaign.

Improving Cheltenham were stopped in their tracks by a useful Doncaster side, who registered goals through Michael McIndoe, David Morley and John Melligan.

The first half proved an eventful 45 minutes with Cheltenham having claims for a penalty turned down and midfielder Mark Yates going close with an 18-yard shot before Doncaster took an 11th minute lead.

The goal came from the penalty spot after Cheltenham striker Bob Taylor had tripped Melligan and McIndoe stepped up to score from the spot.

The home side hit back eight minutes later when Yates headed in at close range from a Martin Devaney corner, but Doncaster proved a pacy side who carried a threat from various areas of the pitch.

They almost scored when a lob from Gregg Blundell beat goalkeeper Shane Higgs and was booted off the line by defender Brian Wilson, although with 25 minutes gone Rovers got their noses back in front.

Defender David Morley scored it, making a clever run to meet a McIndoe free-kick with a firm header.

Rovers goalkeeper Andy Warrington dived to parry a long-range drive from Grant McCann just before the break, but six minutes into the second half Doncaster increased their lead when Melligan ran onto a long ball from Ricky Ravenhill before rolling a shot past Higgs.

After that Cheltenham created a series of half-chances but were unable to force a way back into the game.

They should have scored 15 minutes from time when substitute Kayode Odejayi broke clear, but he was tackled just as he was about to shoot by defender Steve Foster.

Delighted Doncaster manager David Penney said: "We've been looking to average two points a game so to get all three was a big bonus. I thought we looked bright and fresh. We defended well and took our chances well." Cheltenham manager John Ward had no complaints about the result. "I can't grumble about it, we were beaten by the better team on the day and their set pieces made a difference," he said.

"But I told the players not to get carried away by last week's Cup win over Orient so I'm not going to be too harsh on them after a defeat either."
