Division Two strugglers Cheltenham Town belied their lowly status to defeat Colchester United and progress into the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy for the second season running.

Cheltenham enjoyed the better of the first-half chances and were gifted the lead in first-half stoppage time when Colchester goalkeeper Richard McKinney brought down Paul Brayson in the area and was sent off.

Brayson got up to score the penalty himself and also added the fourth goal when he rounded substitute goalkeeper Simon Brown 12 minutes from time.

In between, Scott McGleish headed Colchester level from a Joe Keith cross on 57 minutes, but Cheltenham regained the lead with an expert Grant McCann free-kick from 20 yards.

Julian Alsop scored the third goal, which virtually decided the result, when a skilful run from Martin Devaney ended in a shot which rebounded off the post for the giant striker to tap in from close range
