Cheltenham Town will take their fight against relegation to the final day of the season after a comprehensive win over Blackpool.

The Robins achieved victory in some style but a win for Chesterfield over Bristol City means that Cheltenham must better their result next Saturday in order to stay up.

Cheltenham manager Bobby Gould wanted to add a physical presence to his attack so he made the unusual move of selecting central defender Michael Duff alongside the veteran Tony Naylor.

The home side tore into Blackpool in the early stages but it was all a bit too hurry, scurry with passes going astray and too many hopeful long balls being headed clear by the Tangerines' experienced back-line.

Naylor went close when his shot from close range hit defender Ian Hughes in the face and Blackpool could have scored on the breakaway when teenager Matthew Blinkhorn dragged his shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

But the goal which settled the nerves of the Cheltenham supporters arrived in the 36th minute when a good attacking move resulted in a corner.

Grant McCann curved the ball across and Jamie Victory arrived to score with a downward header at the far post. Naylor may have got the last touch so the arguments would have to be settled following the game.

Four minutes later the Robins had breathing space when veteran defender Simon Grayson only half cut out a through ball from John Finnigan. Duff raced on to it, clearly relishing his new-found role as a striker, and beat goalkeeper Phil Barnes with a low drive.

The third goal resulted from a beautifully constructed move after 65 minutes. David Bird received a clever back-heel from Martin Devaney before crossing for Naylor, who out-foxed his marker with a corkscrew turn and low drive past Barnes.

"We achieved the win in a comprehensive manner in the end," said Gould.

"Everyone is happy and we have another week to wait now. We can't do anything about other results. That's football." Blackpool boss Steve McMahon was bitterly disappointed with his team, who have now gone 11 games without a win.

"We have tried everything, but it's not about tactics or the way we play, it's about people. We need strong people here and strong characters and that is what I will be bringing to the club for next season."
