Cheltenham 1 Colchester 1

Relegation haunted Cheltenham Town and Colchester United shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Whaddon Road, a result that neither team would consider particularly satisfactory.

The outcome was worse for bottom of the table Cheltenham, who have won only four times out of 17 home league games this season. They remain rooted to the bottom and will rue a series of missed chances that contributed to their failure to take all three points.

Colchester, meanwhile, increased their unbeaten run to four games, a sequence that will improve acting manager Geraint Williams' chances of landing the job on a permanent basis when he is interviewed on Monday.

Cheltenham took the lead in the second minute when Michael Duff's header into the six-yard box was nodded past the goalkeeper by Julian Alsop.

Colchester stormed back into the game with on-loan striker Gareth Williams having two good chances before grabbing the equaliser a minute before the break after good work from Joe Keith.

Cheltenham searched in vain for a second-half winner with Mark Yates heading wide from close in, Damian Spencer shooting straight at the goalkeeper from 12 yards and McCann seeing a late free-kick touched over the bar by Simon Brown.

"It was a better performance that Tuesday and it was nice to score the early goal," said Cheltenham manager Bobby Gould.

"We had a little period before half time when we lost concentration but we had the better chances in the second half." Geraint Williams added: "We were coming on strongly when half-time came and scored a good goal. In the second half they tried to use the slope to their advantage but we defended well.

"I'll go into my interview on Monday and just be myself. Hopefully that will be enough to make me the manager of Colchester United."
