Damien Spencer was given a chance to impress after some fine erformances in the reserve side. Spencer came in at the expense of Paul Brayson and Hugh McAuley also returned to first team action, with Mark Yates dropping to the bench.

In an entertaining game, Cheltenham were on top for much of the first half. McAuley was prominent on his return and Spencer was causing problems for the Wycombe defence with his pace and power. Cheltenham played some fast attacking football, but they could not find a way past Wycombe ’keeper Martin Taylor. The former Derby stopper distinguished himself with a handful of fine saves in the first period. The pick of Taylor’s saves was a full stretch dive low to his right to deny Martin Devaney, who headed powerfully towards goal after a deep Hugh McAuley cross. Devaney was denied by Taylor again after 20 minutes, as the experienced ’keeper bravely dived at his feet to smother the ball when it looked like Devaney was favourite to put his side ahead.

Steve Book in the Cheltenham goal was largely a spectator in the first half, but Taylor was called into action again before half-time. He flew to his right, this time to divert a fine shot from the impressive McAuley off for a corner. McAuley then saw his free-kick fumbled away for another corner by Taylor who looked to be in unbeatable form. A Darren Currie free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar for the visitors, but Cheltenham went into the half-time break unlucky not to be ahead.

The second half was a more even affair, with Book called into action to deny Dannie Bulman. A long range effort from Currie also caused Book some problems, as it swerved and dipped in the air, but the danger was cleared before any of Wycombe’s front men could react to Book’s parry. Former Cheltenham loanee, Martyn Lee, entered the action with two minutes to go and Jonny Dixon looked lively as he replaced Craig Faulconbridge. Spencer continued to stretch the Wycombe defence and McAuley fired a late free-kick over Taylor’s crossbar. There was to be no breakthrough however and the Robins were forced to settle for a point. A draw was probably a fair result and Cheltenham’s hard fought point moves them up two places to 21st.
