Robins see off 10-man Vale

Jeff Goulding scored the only goal of the game to consign promotion-chasing Vale to a sixth defeat in seven games and leave supporters calling for new boss Gannon to be given funds in the transfer market.

The contest swung in the visitors' favour when Vale skipper Gareth Owen was sent off for a professional foul on Wes Thomas six minutes before the interval.

Owen was isolated in a one-on-one when he took a tug on the speedy striker's shirt to leave referee Paul Tierney with no option other than produce the red card.

There was little sign of a breakthrough in the early stages of the second half, but Cheltenham made the extra man pay when the unmarked Goulding netted his ninth goal of the season.

Former Vale full-back Keith Lowe delivered an excellent cross from the right and Goulding made no mistake as he buried a six-yard header low to Stuart Tomlinson's left.
