The central defender last played for the Robins in the 5-4 reversal against Bradford back in late August but is hoping to take part in a reserve match within the next week or so.
Otherwise, Yates has no injury or suspension problems to contend with as he looks to record back-to-back wins for the Gloucestershire club for the first time since last April.
Saturday's 2-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Morecambe will have given the Robins a much-needed shot in the arm as they look to scramble away from the bottom two.
But Cheltenham will have to improve their record against a Torquay side who have already beaten them 3-0 in the reverse fixture at Plainmoor, 3-1 in the FA Cup and 3-1 in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
