Match Preview: Cheltenham Town V Wycombe Wanderers

Last updated : 16 December 2002 By Jon Palmer
Wycombe have already visited Whaddon Road once this season and they emerged victorious in the LDV Vans Trophy Second Round clash back in November. Dannie Bulman gave the Chairboys the lead, only for Richard Forsyth to equalise for Cheltenham deep into injury time to send the tie into extra time. Lewis Cook hit the ‘golden goal’ in the 99th minute to put his side into the regional quarter finals, where they were beaten by Bristol City.

Wycombe were knocked out of the Worthington Cup by Cheltenham’s FA Cup Third Round opponents Sheffield United, going down 4-1. They lost out on the chance of another run in the FA Cup, crashing out 4-2 to Brentford in the First Round.

Lawrie Sanchez’s side lie in 13th place in the Division Two table, five points ahead of Graham Allner’s Cheltenham and have only won twice on their travels in the league this season, coming away with three points at Colchester and Swindon. They ended a poor run of results on Saturday, defeating Port Vale 3-1 at Adams Park.

Cheltenham are likely to face Martyn Lee on Saturday, who appeared on loan for the Robins at the end of last season. Lee, a neat and tidy midfielder, made 5 league appearances for Steve Cotterill’s promotion winning side and appeared in both legs of the play-off semi-final win over Hartlepool. The 22-year-old was on the bench for the Millennium Stadium final win over Rushden & Diamonds. Lee made his first start of the season for Wycombe in the win over Port Vale and he seems likely to face his old friends at Whaddon Road on Saturday.

Allner’s men will also be facing Darren Currie, the former Barnet winger who has impressed whenever he has appeared against Cheltenham. Another former Bees player, Sean Devine, has netted eight times this season and will be looking to add to his tally on Saturday. Sanchez also has experienced forward Andy Rammell at his disposal, the 35-year-old, former Walsall striker, has five goals to his name this term.

Cheltenham need to add to their three home wins if they are to enhance their hopes of staving off relegation back to Division Three.
