Williams, who was number two to Robins boss Bobby Gould in his time as Wales manager, has recently been scouting the non - league for Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson.

"One of my jobs at Newcastle was to scour the non - league because there are some good players there," Williams said.

"I think that Bobby wants to develop the club along the lines of Crewe Alexandra, who have been finding good players for years."

Among the players that Williams has developed are England under - 21 manager David Platt and Liverpool and England midfielder Danny Murphy.
