Former Coventry City trainee Devaney was taken off was brought on as a substitute against QPR in the Carling Cup, and only spent 26 minutes on the pitch before being taken off, and spent 33 minutes on the pitch before it happened again on Saturday.

Devaney's body language when he returned to the dug out on Saturday showed that he was not happy with the decision to take him off, and Gould was seen to wag a finger in his direction.

But Gould later said that he was taken off because he was wearing the wrong footwear for the wet conditions down the side of the pitch.

"I went over there after the game and it is extremely wet down that side. His selection of boots was wrong and the referee agreed with me that it was very slippery out there."
