Cheltenham Town v Burnley

FA Cup 4th Round - 27/1/02 - Whaddon Road

The reign of Steve Cotterill reached a new high when his side rewrote the record books again, beating First Division outfit Burnley and reaching round four for the first time.

Burnley were riding high and looked to be genuine contenders for promotion to the Premiership, but over 7,000 fans packed into Whaddon Road - the biggest crowd since 1956 - anticipating an upset and they were not disappointed.

It was virtually impossible to tell which side was from Division One and which from the Football League's basement. Cheltenham took the game to Burnley right from the off and could have been two goals up before Russell Milton's sweetly struck shot, following a clever free-kick move, flew past Luigi Cennamo.

Alsop had headed a Jamie Victory cross over the bar before Victory himself shot agonisingly wide, after a wonderful move involving Milton and the irrepressible Tony Naylor.

Burnley 'keeper Nik Michopoulos left the field of play after 17 minutes to be replaced by the inexperienced Cennamo, on-loan from Greek side Olympiakos. Cennamo's first real action was to pick the ball out of his goal, after Milton's effort beat the wall and hit the back of the net after 23 minutes.

Shell-shocked Burnley found themselves two down barely three minutes later. Milton cut inside from out on the left flank and his right footed cross was net by the unchallenged Alsop, who powered his header downwards and as it rose to hit the roof of the net, Whaddon Road erupted.

Burnley needed an immediate response and Alan Moore provided it after 29 minutes. It was a fine goal from the left-footed midfielder. He broke thorough and as the Cheltenham defence stood off him, he was able to beat Steve Book and bring the stunned Clarets' fans back to life.

Burnley applied some pressure in the second half and Book had to be on top form to save from Gareth Taylor. Cheltenham held firm and after five tense injury time minutes, they had upset the odds and were in the last 16 of the FA Cup.
